Sources: Michael Young wants out of Texas

The team captain is ready to break ranks.

Michael Young told the Texas Rangers last week that he does not want to be a full-time designated hitter and wants to be traded, sources told ESPN The Magazine’s Buster Olney.

The six-time All-Star has spent his entire 11-year career with the Rangers. He has made other moves to accommodate the team, moving from second base to shortstop for Alfonso Soriano in 2004 and from short to third base for Elvis Andrus in 2009.

With the signing of Adrian Beltre to play third, Young was told that he would be primarily a DH and also fill in at all infield positions. The Rangers then traded for Mike Napoli, meaning Young might lose time at first base and DH.

Young said in the beginning of January that he wanted to be in Texas, but he appears to have changed his mind.

That doesn’t mean that the Rangers will give him away. The team does not want to trade Young unless the deal improves the club, sources told Olney. Texas has had talks with the Rockies about Young, but both sides need concessions to make a trade work.

Young hit .284 with 21 homers and 91 RBIs in 157 games for a Rangers team that reached the World Series. He committed 19 errors at third last season, the same number as Beltre.

Young’s desire to be traded was first reported by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

When I read this headline I was just straight up shocked. The face of the Rangers franchise for 11 years now wants out. This really angers me and cannot be true because he has not been given the respect he deserves. Being an All-Star and switching multiple positions for new players has been enough to earn you the respect and stop getting bullied around right? I guess not apparently. He is a true class act and a solid player with a few years left in him. I hope he can stay in Texas with that dynamic offense or win a championship with another franchise…
