The Pedro Feliciano and New York Mets mess

The New York Yankees and the New York Mets is one of the biggest rivalries in New York Sports.  The Subway series is a big deal being a New Yorker myself and well, the fire is already brewing…

The New Yankees lefty specialist Pedro Feliciano is on the DL with a rotator cuff strain. He disagreed with GM Brian Cashman’s opinion that the Mets “abused'” him by using him in 266 games over the past three seasons.

However, he said pitching coach Dan Warthen hurt his feelings by agreeing with Cashman, saying the Mets excessive use of Feliciano was the reason they chose not to re-sign the left-handed specialist after eight seasons. Feliciano pointed out that while he might have preferred to remain a Met, he chose the Yankees because they gave him a two-year deal worth $8 million, with a club option for a third year.

And he said he had a special brand of payback planned for when the Mets and Yankees meet in interleague play (May 20-22 at Yankee Stadium and July 1-3 in Flushing).

“I will show him in the Subway Series when I strike out Ike Davis,” Feliciano said. “When I jump up and down on the mound I’ll be like, ‘That’s for you.”’

Davis didn’t seem to mind his name being thrown into the mix.

After he caught wind of it on Tuesday, Davis joked, “I mean, I did strike out how many times last year (138)? It’s not that tough a feat.”

He added, “His job is to come in and strike me out. But I’m going to make him not strike me out. Feliciano is a pretty funny guy, so what are you going to do?”

Warthen declined to comment on Tuesday.

This is awesome but also a complete mess at the same time. You don’t want to cause controversy in April when you play in May and June but at the same time it brings the rivalry back to life. As a Mets fan, I feel like the Mets did overuse Feliciano last year and it took a toll on him during the offseason. It should be interesting to see if he gets back to normal  with the Yankees after his DL stint. On the other side, I love the professionalism of first baseman Ike Davis. He is a pro athlete and rubbed it off like dust on his shirt. He knows how to handle the media and say the right thing and not put himself or the team in more trouble. This kids future is bright and I am excited about it. The one thing to be alarmed about this situation is why didn’t Dan Warthen comment? He should have come out and gave his two  sense in the whole situation. I think he didn’t do the right thing by beating around the bush. In the end, this heightens the rivalry come summer time and it should be interesting to see how both teams handle the situation when they play each other. Let’s play ball folks…
