(AP) – Marquette freshman and key point guard recruit Duane Wilson will redshirt this season because of a left leg injury.

Wilson missed most of the preseason after sustaining a stress fracture in mid-October. Marquette announced the move Friday and said Wilson only recently returned to practice on a limited basis.

The Golden Eagles (7-5) play their final nonconference game Saturday against Samford before opening in the new-look Big East on Tuesday at Creighton.

This is a very smart decision for the young point guard. You never want to put a player in danger of hurting themselves again or causing injury to another part of their body. It will be nice for Duane to learn Marquette’s system and have his cousin, Jamil Wilson, a senior forward on the team carry him under his wing. I expect the future back court of JaJuan Johnson and Wilson to be a dominant force for the future of the program. And I also look at this like the case of Junior Cadougan who decided to play his freshman year rather than sit out the entire season. If Junior would have sat, he would have been the starting point guard for this Marquette team and who knows where they would be right now with #5 running the point. So take a big sigh of relief Marquette fans and understand that Wilson will make the Golden Eagles better next season rather than pushing him right now…
