David Tyree thinks he is watching the 2008 Giants all over again

In his years as the Giants’ top special teams player and miracle-making wide receiver, David Tyree had never had trouble expressing himself. But when he saw Lawrence Tynes’ overtime kick split the uprights Sunday in San Francisco, he was left dumb-struck.

“I might have been just as speechless as I was when we won the Super Bowl four years ago,” he said in a conference call Tuesday. “To actually see this thing coming to fruition.

“I don’t think anything happens by accident. We’ve always got the storylines of what happened four years ago. You can look at revenge. You can look at the progression.”

So many parallels. Miracle catches — Tyree’s ball-to-helmet with Rodney Harrison draped all over him, and Hakeem Nicks‘ Hail Mary grab in front of two Packers defenders. Eli Manning vs. Tom Brady; Giants-Patriots. The Road Warrior theme.

“It’s impossible to ignore,” Tyree said.

Also impossible to ignore was Nicks’ catch in the conference semifinal that decisively changed the momentum of that huge win over the Packers. Tyree said it had much the same effect as his catch had against the Patriots.

“Beyond the catch, what I liked about it was it was more about momentum than it was about the catch,” Tyree said. “I can say the same thing about my catch. Everybody says to me, ‘When you made that catch, I knew the Giants were going to win the game.’ When Hakeem Nicks made that catch, that probably took about 80 percent of the wind out of those Green Bay fans.”

There could be more heroics forthcoming on Feb. 5 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Tyree, now retired at age 32, will be watching, probably in wonderment at how familiar it all looks.

The way this team has been playing feels like the 2008 Giants and the 2011 Packers. David Tyree is one of the all time greatest Giants just for that one play in Super Bowl 42. Now in Super Bowl 46 it could be the same story for the Giants but this is a completely different team that they will see this time around. Tyree was already speechless and in a few weeks he could even be awe struck…

A look back to Super Bowl 42 and the catch

January 25, 2011

ESPN.com  is doing a nice piece on the David Tyree catch from Super Bowl 42 when the Giants upset the New England Patriots 17-14. ABOVE, is a clip of David Tyree explaining everything that happened in the play and what it meant to be a part of history. Here is a quote of the century from David Tyree regarding the final countdown:

“At that point, everything in me was just saying, I’m not letting this ball go. One hand was dislodged from the football and I just knew I was going to hold onto the ball with my other hand, not knowing that my helmet was the only thing that was giving it a brace. So, it was just a moment of destiny.”

This was the greatest Super Bowl and the greatest catch I have ever seen. Even if you are not a Giants or Patriots fan it is still up there as one of the best ever played. Tyree is out of football but gosh will his heart be ever ingrained in New York and Super Bowl history…
